Simi NIMBY* (*Not In My Back Yard)...
You are here ~~> Home ~~> Recycling Ideas, Suggestions & Topics Index

I have few answers, some ideas but LOTS of questions about how we can pass on the legacy of a cleaner and healthier community to our children and grandchildren.  If you have an idea to contribute to this topic section, please pass it on!
  • Add an additional grey recycler container for free...   Simply call G.I. Rubbish at 522-9400 and ask them to deliver one - mine was delivered the same day, then 'take the challenge' and see how little you deposit into your blue container and how much more you can deposit into your grey (recycling) container.  My family did this (3 adults) - we started on June 3rd and not one bag of trash was carried out to the blue trash container until June 7th (5 full days later) BUT we filled up one grey recycler container completely and had started on a second one!  Normally at my house, every other day or so we have been taking out a bag of trash from the kitchen.  I was the 'hall monitor' and whenever I opened up the lid of our kitchen trash can, I looked to see if anyone else had accidentally trashed something that was recyclable.  By the end of this period, everyone around here was looking for the recyclable symbol on the bottom of items before they just threw it away!
  • Add a "No Solicitations" sign to your front door...  We have one because we don't want salespeople knocking on our door, but this also helps to lower the amount of flyers and brochures left at our front door as well.  If someone still puts a hanger on my door (despite the sign), I call the company, advise them we have the "No Solicitations" sign on our door, but one of their hired employees ignored the sign and left a flyer or brochure anyway... hopefully (eventually) these companies will get the message and stop leaving their paper at homes where homeowners don't want them to start out with!
  • Beverage Containers & How To Recycle them... I wasn't aware that as a consumer you can ask to be paid per count instead of per pound if you have less than 50 per material type.  Read more HERE.
  • Create a workplace recycling program... here's a good website to start out with.  And you can start out the process at home too... instead of just having a trash can aside of my computer, I've taken one of those magazine storage boxes that you can purchase at any office supply store and turned it sideways, sliding it into the bookshelf section of my computer desk right underneath the printer (the more convenient it is, the more likely someone is to do it!).  Pages printed that used to be thrown away are now collected in this storage box... once this gets filled, it is easy to pull out and carry directly to the grey recycling container.
  • Eyeglasses...  Not only can your old eyeglasses be recycled, they can be a vital resource for others less fortunate as well - see here for collection points and addresses here in Simi.
  • Recycling BEFORE it goes into your trash can...  into the blue container and then directly into the landfill.  Don't know where to drop-off something?  This convenient search mechanism HERE will locate a recycling or re-use location very quickly and efficiently for you!
  • Reduce your incoming junk mail - see here for various methods and addresses.

Keeping it real (always),
Linda
