  Height Perspectives: Landfill Expansion Proposal

Should we citizens allow this landfill expansion application and process to move forward, we might want to look around our community and put into perspective in regards to what this will mean to the topography of our beloved community.

The chart below is in scale.  Currently the Simi Valley Landfill is approved at 1,118 feet msl (mean sea level) - our City Hall sits at 760' msl.  The Simi Valley Hospital and Corriganville are 75' and 82' lower, respectively. than the current landfill height The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is at 1,200' msl, but if we approve this application, the Simi Landfill will be 70' HIGHER than the Library when it is done (and allowed to expand if the current application is approved).

Look around at your community on a beautiful morning and sunset evening... Our valley is ringed with ridges that are between 1,600 and 2,000 feet msl.  Come across the Santa Susana Pass, which has a breath-taking view, you'll be only 330' feet higher up than the proposed expanded landfill!  The Library, a huge source of pride in our community, will be 70' lower than the landfill - and you can see the landfill currently from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library!

What's wrong with this picture?  I might be a simple, everyday common citizen but I don't want to look across the valley and see an 'ant-hill' of trash and garbage trucks going up and down the sides of landfill, hauling in more trash from every other county and community around Simi Valley.

One of the most magnificent things about our community is the view and topography.  Currently there are perfume "misters" on the one side of the landfill to make the winds smell better when they're blown towards the Big Sky development (and even then, they don't work that well as I learned firsthand myself on June 2nd, taking pictures of the current landfill from the corner of Eringer and Lakota drives - not only could I see the landfill and the trucks as they were dumping trash from there, we could smell it from our vehicle).

What happens when the landfill is the tallest structure around our community?  How can our entire community NOT be affected by the stench that is emitted from the landfill if we allow this expansion to go forth?  Simi Valley is Chumash Indian for "Valley of the Winds" - with the gusts of winds we get here, there's not enough perfume in our state to contain the smells we all will experience during high winds here in our community!

Keeping it real (always),
Linda
